Problem

Everyday, the world over, extraordinary people face unthinkable odds to fight AIDS and defend the legal and human rights of those affected by it. These individuals and organizations work in hostile, repressive environments, risking their lives to better or save the lives of others. But too often, because of stigma and discrimination, their heroic efforts go unsupported and unacknowledged. In the worst cases, they are unjustly persecuted or simply killed for doing their work.

The Gift

The Awards for Action on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights were established in 2002 by the Legal Network and Human Rights Watch. They highlight outstanding contributions that decrease vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and protect the rights and dignity of those infected and affected. Recognizing excellence and long-term commitment to work having a direct impact on HIV/AIDS and human rights issues — in particular work that is of direct relevance to marginalized individuals and communities — an award is presented annually to one Canadian and one international recipient. The Awards validate their efforts and inspire them to continue their courageous work.
